A practical guide to testing an overseas card at GS25, CU and 7-Eleven, plus the difference between convenience-store and bank ATMs.
Table of Contents
International Visa and Mastercard cards may work at a Korean convenience-store checkout, but acceptance depends on the terminal, issuer and transaction settings. Carry a small cash backup and ask before opening a large purchase.
Checkout sequence
- Ask the cashier whether an overseas card is accepted.
- Insert or tap when prompted; do not hand over your PIN.
- Keep the receipt and check the final KRW amount in your banking app.
If it declines, try another card or pay cash. A convenience-store ATM is a separate service: it may be operated by a bank or independent network and can have different availability and fees.
ATM checklist
Look for an English menu and international-network marks such as Visa, Mastercard or Plus/Cirrus. Review the on-screen fee and exchange-rate choice before confirming. Your card issuer may add its own fee, so the ATM display is not always the complete cost.
