Jjimjilbang Etiquette in Korea: A First Visit Guide for Foreigners
Understand Korean bathhouse check-in, nude bathing zones, shared sauna rooms, towels and tattoo policies before your first jjimjilbang visit.

A jjimjilbang normally has separate changing and bathing areas by gender, plus a shared clothed sauna zone. Follow the signs and ask staff when a rule is unclear.
At the entrance
Pay or scan in, receive a locker key or wristband, remove shoes where directed and change before entering the bathing area. The bathing zone is nude; the common sauna area is clothed. Phones and cameras do not belong in either area.
Towels, food and tattoos
Small towels are used for washing and drying; the folded “sheep-head” towel is a playful sauna custom, not a requirement. Sikhye and baked eggs are common snacks. Tattoo rules differ by business, so check the venue’s current policy before paying rather than assuming a blanket rule.
Respectful behavior
Wash before entering pools, keep voices low and never photograph other guests. Facilities and hours change, so verify the official venue page on the day.
